How to use a Landing Page

A Landing Page introduces a section of your website. It highlights the most important subsections and drives people to them. Your homepage and the main labels in your website’s main navigation are Landing Pages.

Available Page Components

Customize a Landing Page to your needs with the following Page Components

The following Page Components cannot be used on a Landing Page:

Required fields

1. Title - 255 characters max

The Title appears at the top of every page.

2. Summary - 160 characters max

The Summary (also called a meta description) provides a short description of the page for search results, social media, or assistive technology. The Summary does not appear on the page.

When creating a Summary be concise and describe what visitors will find on the page.

3. Page Content - unlimited characters

The Page Content is where you can add content that will appear on the page. Add Page Content by selecting Layout in the upper right corner on the screen.

Optional fields

1. Short Title - 35 characters max

Use the Short Title when the Title is approximately 75 characters and you’d like a shorter label to show in the breadcrumbs and side navigation menus.

2. Description - 250 characters max

The Description appears at the top of the page underneath the Page Title. The Description provides context to other parts of a landing page.

Depending on the goals of your landing page, you may want to:

  • Use the same text in both the description and the summary. Summary does not show on-page.
  • Use the Description to show a tagline or brief statement
  • Not include the Description at all, if it would be redundant

3. Featured Links - 50 characters max

You can use up to two Featured Link buttons to call attention to important links. When linking to a URL outside of the Maryland.gov domain, the link will show an icon that indicates you will leave the website.

4. Featured Image

Featured Image can be included at the top of the page.

  • The image should be meaningful.
  • Don’t use logos, branding, or images with overlaid text.
  • The image size is 540x510 pixels.

If you don’t use a Featured Image, your Landing Page will show a photo of the Maryland flag.
